Just a quick post for the moment…
This morning I discovered a very cool application for automatically adjusting the color temperature of your computer monitor (especially LCDs) so that it’s not so rough on the eyes when using the computer at night. It’s called f.lux and it works on Linux, Mac and Windows. It’s really a great idea, and something I didn’t think about much before. When you stare at an LCD monitor at night, the color temperature simulates daylight and stimulates the brain so it’s difficult to go to sleep for a while. I’ve definitely noticed this effect! You can fiddle around manually with your monitor’s brightness and color settings, which would be a pain in the neck, but this application automatically adjusts the monitor settings based on your location and time settings.
I just installed it and it seems to be working. It’ll be interested to see how it looks tonight. Here’s a link to an article that explains more about using f.lux with a link to the application website and installation instructions:
Update: This thing really works! It is now 11:33 PM and I’ve been using the computer for about and hour and a half. I can see a difference in brightness and a slightly warmer quality . It’s quite subtle, but I notice it. This is neat!
